BJ is from Virginia Beach. He fronts his own band which has supported acts such as Lionel Richie, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. He is also an avid diver, often posting videos of him underwater.

BJ Griffin's audition in Episode 1807 consisted of singing Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" while playing the electric cello. All 4 judges voted "Yes", sending him to the next round.
