Duo Transcend was a trapeze duo act from Season 13 of America's Got Talent. They finished in the Bottom 5 of the Top 10

Background

Duo Transcend (Mary Wolfe-Nielsen and Tyce Nielsen) are married performers from Salt Lake City, Utah, who specialize in duo trapeze, aerial silk, tramp wall, diving, and acting.

They have been married for six years and met while performing as high divers in a show. They have a two-year-old son named Jaxx. [1]

Tyce has an eye condition that he's been waiting to get surgery for. According to him, he has "really bad eyesight". Although his doctors have advised them to discontinue the act, Tyce says "We relied on the feeling and the connection between each other".

Audition

Duo Transcend's audition in Episode 1304 consisted of performing an aerial trapeze routine to RAIGN's "Wicked Game". Although Mel B voted "No", stating she was not "wowed" by their performance, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell voted "Yes", sending the pair to the Judge Cuts.

Judge Cuts

Duo Transcend's Judge Cuts performance in Episode 1307 consisted of performing an aerial trapeze routine, now incorporating fire. As the duo attempted to finish their performance with Tyce blindfolding himself, he was unable to catch his partner Mary, causing her to plunge down onto a safety mat on the floor. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured by her fall and was able to stand up on her own. Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell, and guest judge Ken Jeong all gave them standing ovations, although they also advised against the duo's request to re-execute the unsuccessful part of their act. Their performance was strong enough for the judges to send them to the Quarterfinals along with Aaron Crow.

Quarterfinals

Duo Transcend's Week 2 Quarterfinals performance in Episode 1313 consisted of performing a trapeze routine to 2WEI's cover of "Toxic" by Britney Spears. They re-attempted the same blindfold trick from Judge Cuts, which they successfully completed. Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell all gave them standing ovations. Duo Transcend received enough votes to advance to the Semifinals in Episode 1314 instead of The Sacred Riana.

Semifinals

Duo Transcend's Week 1 Semifinals performance in Episode 1317 consisted of a trapeze routine to Hidden Citizens' version of "(I Just)" Died In Your Arms" by Cutting Crew, transitioning to doing tricks on roller skates amidst flames. Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell all gave them standing ovations. Duo Transcend finished in fourth, fifth or sixth place in America's Vote. In the Dunkin' Save, they received fewer online votes than Samuel J. Comroe. In the Judges' Choice, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell did not vote for them but Howie Mandel and Mel B did, forcing a tiebreaker; whichever act had received more votes from America would progress. They received more votes than Voices of Hope Children's Choir, advancing to the Finals in Episode 1318.

Finals

Duo Transcend's Finals performance in Episode 1321 consisted of performing a trapeze routine in which Tyce was completely blindfolded, backed by a quartet of drummers set to "Out of Time" by Hidden Citizens. In a role reversal, Mary dropped Tyce at the end of the routine. Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell all gave them standing ovations.

Finale

For the finale in Episode 1322, Duo Transcend performed tricks on the trapeze while Brian King Joseph performed a violin duet with Lindsey Stirling. They did not receive enough votes to advance to the Top 5, eliminating them from the competition instead of Zurcaroh.

Trivia

  • Duo Transcend is the first trapeze act to reach the finals, and the second aerial act since Sofie Dossi in Season 11.
