Puppet Simon & The Cow Belles was a puppet group from Season 18 of America's Got Talent. They were eliminated in the Semifinals.
Background[]
The Cow Belles met in their high school choir and bonded over their mutual love of country music, the tight harmonies of the ’40s and modern pop hits. They were excited to sing in front of “America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell, so they had a puppet of Simon join them to sing a rendition of Queen’s “Somebody to Love.” With the support of the “AGT” judges and the audience cheering them on, Puppet Simon & The Cow Belles are determined now more than ever to sing their hearts out to try and win the hearts of America… and a million dollars!
Their creator, Christian Anderson, is a custom puppet maker and he was responsible for designing The Cow Belles. Christian Anderson previously auditioned with a solo puppet called Ira in Season 10 where he was eliminated in the Semifinals. Christian Anderson once again auditioned with a group called The Poptimystics in Season 16 where they were eliminated in the deliberations.
Audition[]
Puppet Simon & The Cow Belles audition in Episode 1806 consisted of performing both "Toxic" by Britney Spears and "Somebody to Love" by Queen. Sofia Vergara buzzed the act. Although Sofia voted "No", Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel voted "Yes", sending them to the next round.
Deliberations[]
The group was chosen to advance to the Semifinals.
Semifinals[]
Puppet Simon & The Cow Belles' Semifinals performance in Episode 1816 consisted of singing "You'll Be Back" by Jonathan Groff from the musical Hamilton and Jennifer Lopez's "Let's Get Loud" with a puppet version of Sofia and the Cow Belles as backup singers/dancers. Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell buzzed the act (but only buzzing each other's puppets). However, Sofia ended up giving them a standing ovation. They did not receive enough votes to enter the top 5 of the night in Episode 1817, eliminating them from the competition instead of D'Corey Johnson.
Trivia[]
- The Puppet Simon was voiced by Gabe Brown, one-half of Season 17 semifinalists The Brown Brothers. His season partner, Merissa Beddows, voiced the Puppet Sofia in the group's Semifinals performance.
- They were the only act in the Season 18 Live Shows that received more than one buzzer.
- They’re the first ever act to receive a solo standing ovation from Sofia Vergara.
- They’re the first ever act to be buzzed in a live show but receive a standing ovation from the same judge immediately after the performance.
- Puppet Simon and the Cow Belles are the second overall act in the history of the live shows to receive both an ovation and a buzz from the same judge, the first being Yumbo Dump in Season 13, but this is the first case in which the buzz was not later retracted.
