Sam Johnson, also known as Slackwire Sam, was a daredevil from Season 8 of America's Got Talent. He was eliminated in the Quarterfinals.

Background[]

At the age of 14, Sam ran away from his Burlington, VT home and joined a circus (during the summers, with his parents' permission). There he was mashed and molded into a performer by coaches from the famed Moscow Circus. Soon Sam found himself performing dangerous stunts atop an 80-foot sway-pole. At one point, Sam put away his sway-pole and street performing dreams when faced with single parenthood to create a stable life for his young son., but he eventually continued. 1

Audition[]

Sam Johnson's audition in Episode 802 consisted of climbing to the top of an 80-foot-high sway pole and performing a handstand from that height. Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel all voted "Yes," sending Sam to the Vegas Round.

Vegas Round[]

Sam Johnson was sorted into the "Danger Acts" category in the Vegas Round. His performance in Episode 808 consisted of pouring kerosene on his hat, lighting the hat on fire, and then dowsing his body with kerosene. He then juggled three flaming batons while riding a unicycle on a tightrope. His performance was strong enough for the judges to send him to the Quarterfinals along with Alexandr Magala and Brad Byers in Episode 809.

Quarterfinals[]

Sam Johnson's Week 5 Quarterfinals performance in Episode 818 consisted of standing on top of an 80-foot sway pole, and then holding onto it as the pole turned rotated 360 degrees. As his performance was too large for Radio City Music Hall, he performed it outside the venue a week before it was televised. Sam did not receive enough votes to be sent to the Semifinals in Episode 819, eliminating him from the competition along with 2Unique and Melody Caballero, instead of Catapult Entertainment.
