Season 17 of America's Got Talent premiered on May 31, 2022. The entire judging panel from Season 16 returned, as well as the host.
Sonic continued to be the official beverage sponsor of this season, having its products shown throughout the show and their cups on the judges' desks.

Each act that performed in front of the judges was given 90 seconds to demonstrate their talents for the judges. If an act received at least three "Yes" votes from the judges, they were accepted to the next round. Otherwise, they were eliminated from the competition.

55 acts were chosen to advance to the Semifinals.
Semifinals[]

From the 55 acts, 11 acts performed each week over 5 weeks. Each week, the top 2 acts moved on to the Finals. After the Semifinals, 4 eliminated Semifinal acts were selected by the judges to compete in the Instant Save for the last remaining spot in the finals. Although AGT on YouTube named the round ‘Semifinals’, NBC and AGT on Facebook had it named as ‘Qualifiers’

- This is the first season since Season 8 to not have the Instant Save during the results show.
- This is the first time since Season 2 not to have the Judges' Choice vote in the live shows.
- This is the first season to feature two ventriloquists in the live shows.
- The live shows took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium instead of the Dolby Theatre.
- This is the first time since Season 1 where only two acts from each Live show reached the Finals.
- This is also the first time since Season 1 to have a Wildcard act come back for the finals rather than the Semifinals.
- This is the first season where 4 acts compete in the Instant Save instead of the usual 3.
- As well as this, America only had 5 minutes to vote in the Instant Save rather than 25-30 minutes.
- This is the first season to have 11 acts in the final.
- This season has the most amount of times Howie Mandel buzzed in the live shows since Season 7.
- This season is the first time since Season 9 none of the top 5 acts were in the premiere episode. Coincidentally, the top 2 acts in both seasons came from the 4th audition episode.
- This season is the first time since Season 3 in which the public could vote for the wildcard after auditions from a group of eligible acts without any additional performances.
