The Hemphill Kids were an vocal group from Season 1 of America's Got Talent. It was eliminated without performing in the Semifinals.

Background[]

The Hemphill children hail from Chattanooga, Tenn., and made Atlanta home in 2005 under the legal guardianship of their manager, Bryan Johnson, a marketing veteran in the music industry. Back in Chattanooga, The Hemphills' parents are raising four younger children who could become singing sensations, too. [1]

The family's younger siblings, called the 4JZ, perform hip hop, including a gig at New York's Apollo Theater in August.

In 1997, two years after he formed his own musical group called Focus, Anthony Hemphill began noticing his children's talent more. The kids went with him to rehearsals and sang in the microphone when his group took breaks. Seeing their talent, the parents started entering them in contests. The Hemphill Kids won the Riverbend Talent Show each year from 2000 to 2005. In Chattanooga, the Hemphill teenagers attended Central High School and Tyner Academy. Now they are homeschooled in Atlanta, where they live with their manager while working on performances. [2]

Audition[]

The Hemphill Kids' audition in Episode 102 was never televised. It is unknown whether or not the group was buzzed, but at least two judges voted "Yes," sending the act to the Semifinals.

Semifinals[]

The Hemphill Kids were one of five acts eliminated by the judges from the competition in Week 2 of the Semifinals without performing in Episode 106.
